Curriculum

Within the group, all children are supported in developing their potential at their own pace.

Our key person system enables us to ensure a planned curriculum tailored to the needs of each individual child. By means of developmentally appropriate play activities and a high level of individual adult input, we offer a curriculum which enables children to progress towards the early learning goals throughout the Foundation Stage and prepares them for the National Curriculum, which begins at Year 1 in Primary School.

Communication, Language & Literacy Development

Children are encouraged to extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and listening, and by hearing and responding to stories, songs and rhymes.

Children are helped to understand that written symbols carry meaning, to be aware of the purposes of writing and when they are ready, to use drawn and written symbols for themselves. A well-stocked book corner gives every child the opportunity and encouragement to become familiar with books, able to handle them and aware of their uses, both for reference and as a source of stories and pictures.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Within a nurturing environment, children are individually supported in developing confidence autonomy and self-respect.

They are encouraged to work and concentrate independently and also to take part in the life of the group sharing and co-operating with other children and adults. Through activities, conversation and practical example they learn acceptable ways to express their own feelings and to have respect for the feelings of others.

All children are given the opportunity, as appropriate, to take responsibility for themselves and also for the group, and its property.

Problem Solving, Reasoning And Numeracy

By means of adult-supported practical experience, children become familiar with the sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing and counting activities, which form the basis for early mathematics.

As they use their developing mathematical understanding to solve practical problems, children are assisted to learn and use the vocabulary of mathematics identifying objects by shape, position, size, volume and number. Songs, games and picture books help children become aware of number sequences and simple mathematical operations.

Knowledge & Understanding Of The World

Children explore and experiment with a range of natural and manufactured materials. They learn to observe the features of objects and substances, recognising difference, patterns and similarities, and to share and record their findings.

Children are assisted in exploring and understanding their environment, both within the group and also in the wider community. Our new computer room enables children to explore the world of technology and acquire new skills for later learning in history, geography and science.

Physical Development

A range of equipment and opportunities, both indoors and out of doors, allows children to develop confidence and enjoyment in the use and development of their own bodily skills.

A very high level of adult supervision enables children safely to create and meet physical challenges, developing increasing skill and control in moving, climbing and balancing.

At the same time, children are supported in the development of the fine motor skills required to use tools, including pens and pencils, and to handle small objects with increasing control and precision.

Creative Development

Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources to express their own ideas and feelings. Art equipment, including paint, glue, crayons and pencils as well as natural resources, provides for the exploration of colour, shape and texture and the development of skills in painting, drawing and collage. Children join in with and respond to music and stories. There are many opportunities for imaginative role play, both individually and as part of a group.

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a pleasant Christmas Break.

We start the New Year settling the children back in to the Pre-School routine. The children are cutting up fruit and making kebabs to eat - delicious!

We will continue to sing the days of the week song and look at the weather, our bird feeder and any changes to what is going on outside.

We are playing a group game with Teddy, and his wash bag to learn about a range of healthy practices in a fun way. We will also be exercising and dancing. To encourage the use of our senses, the children will be touching, smelling and tasting fruit kebabs they have made themselves. We will also be printing with cut fruit and the pictures will be on display. The children will be using listening skills with our musical instrument game and Jolly Phonics songs for the letters SATIPN.

We are revisiting road safety and this time we are learning about wearing seat belts in the car. Please remember to hold your children's hands near roads.

We are singing some shape songs and looking at the shapes around us. Please join in at home - remember wheels are circles. Who can spot a wheel first?

Finally, we are celebrating Chinese New Year on the 23rd-27th January, and this year is the year of the Dragon.

Note for your diary - the last day of term is Friday 10th February.

See you again on 20th February.

1st November - 16th December 2011 : "Celebrations"

This term is a very busy one and the children will be getting ready for the Christmas parties and the Nativity play, practicing and making Christmas crafts.

The children will be hearing numbers from counting to 1-5 and 1-10 and learning correspondence, by using their fingers to record amounts. We will also be learning a new number song about rockets for Bonfire night! To help children to listen we are singing a fun song with sounds, we will then be singing the ABC song and looking at the letters. We will also be learning at the days of the week song and looking at the weather. We are playing a game called "Danny the Dinosaurs' Birthday" during which the children will learn about 'bigger than' and 'enough'. You could join in at home by seeing who is bigger than your child in your family or are there enough plates etc for everybody.

We are spending a week on helping the children share, take turns and learn how to treat their friends. The teachers are going to act out some scenarios e.g wanting all the trains, or not sharing the fairy costume. The children can solve the problems and we will end up by saying what the best thing to do is - should be a lot of fun!

It's road safety week on the 21st to 25th November, so please help by getting the children to hold your hands (or the buggy) and stop at the road side. We will be learning about traffic and singing a song to reinforce this.

Towards the end of term we will showing children some pictures of our entertainer, 'Gary the Musical Clown!' He is particularly good with young children, but please let us know if your child is scared of clowns.

The Nativity plays are on Wednesday, 14th December and the Christmas parties are on Thursday, 15th December. More information will be available later.

From time to time we have students (on work experience weeks and on child care courses) in the Pre-School as part of our links with the community. Both the students and the children gain a lot from this experience and all students are closely supervised and never left alone with the children.

The last day of term is Friday, 16th December.

We will see you again on Wednesday, 4th January 2012!

5th September - 21st October 2011 : "Welcome"

We would like to welcome those returning to us, new children and their families. Our aim is to get to know you and to support your children's progress through the Early Years Foundation Stage towards the Early Learning Goals. Your child's Key Person will gradually introduce our routine and encourage the children to learn staff and children's names, to make friends and feel a sense of belonging. We will be teaching, modelling and praising sharing, taking turns, being kind, being polite and listening to others and we would ask you to join in with this at home.

The children will be singing nursery rhymes from our song bag selection. If you have a favourite song, please let us know.

The children will be painting and gluing, playing musical instruments, singing number rhymes and positional songs as well as playing a roll-a-ball game to help us to learn everyone's names.

All children are different, so please don't worry if your child does not join in at first, they will when they are ready.

Please share with us any photographs, drawing from home or details of family occasions and events so that we can display them on our Sharing Board. The children love to show each other and chat about them.

During Week 6 the children will be taking part in a Rhyme Challenge - singing 5 well-known rhymes. They will be awarded a certificate in Week 7.

If you have any worries or concerns, please chat to your Key Person, the Supervisors - Pat Stevens, Jean Scarff and Jane Gooch or the Manager - Marion Wessel.
